Plagiocephaly in Babies: How Physiotherapy Can Help

Have you noticed that your baby’s head looks a little flatter at the back or to one side? This is known as plagiocephaly.

It is very common, particularly in young babies, as their heads are so soft and easily moulded! It is often related to spending lots of time with the head resting in the same position.

Sometimes plagiocephaly is associated with torticollis (tightness in the neck), which can make it harder for your baby to turn their head freely or look equally to both sides.

How can physiotherapy help?

A paediatric physiotherapist can assess your baby’s head shape, neck movement, posture and overall development. We can then provide simple, practical strategies to help your baby move more freely and spend less time putting pressure on the flattened area.

This may include:

  • Gentle exercises and stretches to improve neck movement

  • Positioning and handling strategies for carrying, feeding and sleeping

  • Tummy time and play ideas

  • Supporting age appropriate motor development

The earlier plagiocephaly and torticollis are identified, the more opportunity there is to influence head shape and movement while your baby’s skull is rapidly growing and changing.

If you're concerned about your baby's head shape do not hesitate to get in touch with Perth Kids Physio to book an appointment.
